Sensors and Electro-Optical Systems are technologies with many applications worldwide, and are also identified as such by the South African Government through the Department of Science and Technology. The fourth International Conference on Sensors, MEMS and Electro-Optical Systems (SMEOS) was held in late last year in Skhukhuza (the main rest camp in the Kruger National Park), following three very successful conferences hosted prior.
The aim of the conference was to provide a common forum for international researchers and product developers to exchange ideas and information about their latest research findings, developments and applications in all areas pertaining to design, fabrication and application in the fields of interest to SMEOS. It is a relatively small field of expertise in South Africa and working together with international colleagues is of the utmost importance.
The conference, affiliated with the International Society of Photonics Engineers (SPIE), attracted 115 delegates with more than 30 international visitors. Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP) supports research initiatives focused on shifting knowledge to insight and as such, sponsored the cost of both the SMEOS 2014 and SMEOS 2016 proceedings – which are set to be published and made available internationally. Prof Monuko du Plessis, of the University of Pretoria, is the Proceedings Editor for the publications set to be published.
