Dr Taryn Bond Barnard – senior lecturer in the Graduate School for Technology Management (GSTM) at the University of Pretoria (UP) and course presenter on the Programme in Project Management (PPM) – has received the prestigious 2018 Global Research Award as Young Researcher at the 6th International Project Management Association (IPMA)* Research Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Award recognises young researchers for outstanding research that has led to a PhD or other early career research projects, bestowing the honour on Dr Bond-Barnard for her research on Project communication, trust, collaboration and success: A structural equation model and the influence of computer mediated communication. Her PhD research project has further led to six peer-reviewed outputs, including a paper in the International Journal of Project Management and one in the International Journal of Managing Projects in Business.

Dr Bond-Barnard’s study addresses the relevance of existing project communication management theory in today’s settings, and its practical implications by assessing the benefits and usage of contemporary communication media. The value of this study is also evident in that it presents a new “human” perspective for investigating project management success.

Apart from her research and postgraduate teaching in project management, she also focuses on presenting certification courses for Project Management Professionals (PMP®) and Certified Project Management Associates (CAPM®) together with project procurement management on the PPM through Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP).

Dr Bond-Barnard expressed her gratitude in receiving the Award, both towards the acknowledgement of her work and further support in promoting research excellence in the field of engineering project management research.

*The IPMA is a global project management association with 40 000 members in more than 60 countries.
