The recently published NZASM Footsteps along the Tracks: The Identified Built Residue of the ‘Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij’ publication was honoured with the Award for Architecture by the South African Institute for Architects (Mpumalanga Region). The published work is a result of a legacy research project carried out by Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP). The initial research project entailed the appraisal of buildings constructed by Dutch architects and engineers active in southern Africa towards the end of the 19th Century.
The award was presented to the authors of the book, Roger Fisher and Nicholas Clarke last month at the awards ceremony held just outside Mbombela. The book was reviewed as follows:
“The project and publication makes for a significant contribution towards creating a greater awareness of this important part of South African history. It also makes a strong argument for the restoration and preservation of heritage, as having economic benefits that could be achieved through the protection and use of the structures. The work is well structured, meticulously put together, and is a thorough survey and documentation. It launches an important basis from which future investigations into heritage management, maintenance and use could be developed. As a body of research the work is deserving of an Award.”
The project team comprised various role players, including The Royal Netherlands Embassy which funded the project, and University of Pretoria and Enterprises UP staff members who all worked tirelessly to complete the research and get the book published.
